TECLA: A Tiny Home Printed from Clay

Andrea | 06/21/2026

What if a home could be built using the earth beneath your feet?

That's the idea behind TECLA, an innovative 3D-printed home created through a collaboration between Mario Cucinella and WASP. Rather than relying on conventional construction materials, TECLA was built primarily from locally sourced clay and earth, using large-scale 3D printing technology to create its distinctive curved structure.

The name TECLA combines "Technology" and "Clay", reflecting the project's goal of blending modern construction methods with one of humanity's oldest building materials. The result is a compact home that demonstrates a radically different approach to housing: using natural materials found on-site, reducing transportation needs, and minimizing construction waste.

One of the most impressive aspects of TECLA is its sustainability. Traditional construction often requires materials to be manufactured, transported, and assembled using energy-intensive processes. By contrast, TECLA's walls were printed directly from a clay-based mixture sourced from the surrounding area. This approach reduces the need for processed building materials and helps lower the environmental impact of construction.

The home's rounded form is more than just visually striking. Its organic design was carefully engineered to balance structural strength, material efficiency, and thermal performance. The thick earthen walls can help regulate indoor temperatures, reducing the need for mechanical heating and cooling in suitable climates.

While TECLA remains a prototype rather than a commercially available tiny home, it offers an exciting glimpse into the future of sustainable housing. As communities around the world search for ways to build homes more affordably and with fewer environmental impacts, projects like TECLA demonstrate how emerging technologies can work alongside natural materials rather than replacing them.

Whether 3D-printed clay homes become common in the future remains to be seen. What is clear is that TECLA challenges conventional ideas about how homes can be built and highlights the potential for innovative, environmentally conscious solutions in the world of small-space living.
