Yamabiko Tiny House Fits Two Living Spaces Into One Compact Design

Andrea | 05/10/2026

The Yamabiko by Ikigai Collective takes an unusual approach to tiny living by fitting two mirrored living spaces into a single compact structure. Designed in Japan, the model was created with practicality in mind, particularly for staff accommodation in resort areas, though its flexible layout opens up a range of other potential uses as well.

Measuring 6.6 m (21.6 ft) long, the tiny house features a clean, modern exterior finished in durable Galvalume steel cladding. The design is simple and understated, blending easily into both rural and urban environments. One of the first details that stands out is the presence of two front doors, hinting at the home’s split layout.

Inside, the Yamabiko is divided into two nearly identical living spaces arranged in a mirrored configuration. Each side includes a compact kitchen with a sink and two-burner stovetop, a small lounge area, storage space, and a loft-style sleeping area accessed by ladder. Warm wood finishes throughout the interior help soften the compact footprint and create a more comfortable atmosphere.

The two halves connect through a shared bathroom positioned in the center of the home. The bathroom includes a shower and toilet and can be accessed from either side. This setup allows two occupants or couples to maintain separate living areas while still sharing essential facilities.

Ikigai Collective designed the Yamabiko to be move-in ready, with integrated hot water, electrical connections, and customizable options including flooring, finishes, and composting toilet configurations. The company emphasizes efficiency and adaptability, which is reflected throughout the design.

Rather than maximizing size, the Yamabiko focuses on making a small footprint work in a smart and functional way. Its dual-living concept offers a different perspective on tiny house design, showing how compact homes can support shared living while still maintaining privacy and independence.
