This Minimal A-Frame Cabin Is Built to Move

A-frame cabins are known for their simple structure and cosy interiors, but Studio Edwards has given the classic design a mobile twist.

Designed in Melbourne, Base Cabin is a compact home on wheels that combines the character of an A-frame cabin with the streamlined look of an Airstream trailer. Designed to be transported on a trailer, it can be moved to different locations while providing a comfortable retreat close to nature.

Designed to Move

The A-frame structure is more than a visual feature. Its efficient geometry uses less material than a conventional framed building, helping keep the cabin light enough to transport.

The exterior is wrapped in black rubber, creating a simple, seamless look while protecting the cabin from the elements. Its compact design also allows it to have minimal impact on the landscape and makes relocating it relatively straightforward.

Inside, the cabin is divided into three main areas. A central bathroom separates the living and dining space from the more private bedroom, while a compact kitchen provides a sink, refrigerator, and storage.

The A-frame creates sloping walls that give the bedroom a cosy, tent-like feel. Wooden panels add warmth to the interior, while a skylight at the highest point of the roof brings natural light into all three spaces.

A Tiny Retreat With Flexibility

Base Cabin was designed as a mobile retreat for people who want a closer connection to the outdoors without giving up the comforts of a thoughtfully designed home.

Rather than being permanently tied to one location, the cabin can be transported and placed where it is needed. Its small size also means less material and a smaller footprint than a conventional dwelling.

Base Cabin was developed as the first model for a company of the same name, which builds bespoke mobile and micro homes. Owners can choose the original design or work with the company to create their own version.
